Setup on your stream PC (Windows)

  1. Download the companion files: nowplaying_windows.py start-nowplaying.bat requirements.txt
  2. Install Python 3.9+ (required) from python.org — tick "Add to PATH" during install
  3. Put the downloaded files in one folder, open a terminal there, and install the two Python packages (required):
    pip install -r requirements.txt
    installs winsdk (Windows media session access) and requests (talks to the bot)
  4. Set your token (must match NOW_PLAYING_TOKEN in the bot's .env):
    setx NOW_PLAYING_TOKEN "paste-token-here"
    open a NEW terminal after setx
  5. Start Apple Music, play a song, then run:
    python nowplaying_windows.py (or the .bat — put a shortcut in shell:startup to auto-run at login)
  6. Testing against a local bot? Point the script at it instead of the live site:
    setx NOW_PLAYING_URL "http://localhost:8085/overlay/nowplaying/update"
    on the permanent PC, leave this unset — it defaults to the live bot URL

The script reads what Apple Music is playing straight from Windows (Media Session API), grabs the album art from Apple, and pushes it here. In OBS: tick Shutdown source when not visible off and Refresh browser when scene becomes active off — the widget keeps its own state. Troubleshooting is in companion/README.md.
